SRINAGAR, Dec 14: The State Election Commissioner, K.K Sharma giving the details said that by-polls for Panch vacant seats were held in 334 vacant seats in the sixth phase. Out of a total of 58094 electors (including 30318 males and 27776 females), 34012 voted and 740 candidates were in fray.
The SEC while giving out the overall percentage said that Jammu division recorded 86.04 per cent and Kashmir division recorded 57.85 per cent voter turnout during the 6th phase of Panch by-elections.
He further said that 74.92 per cent polling was registered in Jammu division whereas 46.13 per cent polling was recorded in Kashmir division. SEC said that Kupwara district topped with 71.70 per cent followed by Kulgam with 67.57 per cent and Ganderbal with 63.50 per cent. While giving information about the highest voter turnout in both the divisions, the SEC said that in Sarpanch by-polls, Ganderbal recorded the highest voter turnout with 66.26 per cent in Kashmir division followed by Bandipora with 54.67 per cent and Baramulla with 51.71 per cent. By and large the polling was peaceful and smooth across the region at all polling stations, said SEC.
Meanwhile, District Panchayat Election Officer (DPEO) Baramulla, Dr G N Itoo today chaired a meeting of various concerned officers to review arrangements put in place for smooth conduct of counting of votes scheduled on 22 December, 2020. It was informed that the administration has established three counting centres in the district at ITI Pattan, SKUAST College Wadoora Sopore and Govt Degree College for Boys Baramulla. The DPEO emphasised upon the concerned authorities to ensure that the counting of election is conducted smoothly.
He directed to ensure adequate heating, lighting and other necessary arrangements so that the staff associated with the process may not face any inconvenience.
Moreover, Dr Itoo stressed upon the concerned to strictly follow all the requisite COVID-19 SOPs and guidelines to avert any kind of eventuality.
Meanwhile, polling in six phases has already been completed whereas for the remaining two phases, the election is scheduled on 16th and 19th of December.
