Address Unemployment
12/31/2020 10:36:38 PM
Growing unemployment in Jammu and Kashmir is a concern for everyone. Many educated youth have crossed the upper age limit fixed for getting a government job, while others are at the brink of becoming overage.
Thousands of youth are registered with employment exchanges across J&K and with each passing day their number is swelling. Despite enrolling themselves in these exchanges not many have got any interview calls till date. The recruitment agencies that are expected to collect the information from these employment exchanges seem in no mood to expedite the process of filling up the vacant posts or to create new avenues for the youngsters.
Everyone is aware of the fact that the government cannot provide jobs to all those who are unemployed but a process needs to be initiated to make a beginning. When J&K was turned into a Union Territory it was promised that more job avenues will be created and providing employment to the educated youth will be a priority.
The government has to do something for the generation next. If the jobs cannot be provided, then a mechanism should be put in place to develop the private sector so that more avenues could be created for the skilled and educated youth.
It has been more than a year since J&K has been turned into a UT but the problem of creating employment opportunities for youth hasn't been solved till date.
The government has been claiming that MOUs have been signed with the big houses and in coming days big companies would be investing in Jammu and Kashmir. It remains to be seen how many companies will venture into J&K and how many people will these firms employ. The government should focus on developing entrepreneurial skills of the youth. We have to train the youth to become employers rather than employment seekers.
The past experiences of J&K youth have been very bitter as they were made to wait for years for the job interviews. Now, the system has changed and the old approach too needs to be reversed.
The employment packages that have been announced during the past few months should be rolled out and the selection process needs to be carried out purely on merit basis.
The former political dispensations had set a very wrong precedent. In the erstwhile J&K State more than merit it was influence that worked. Jobs were mostly provided to those candidates who used to have political backing or the ones who could manage to get themselves in.
