J&K to become power surplus
1/4/2021 11:03:44 PM
Jammu and Kashmir administration signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) to make the region power surplus is a welcome move.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha after the signing of the MoU stated that in the past 70 years, J&K was able to generate only 3504 MW but in the next 4 years, we will generate 3498MW additional electricity to ensure energy security of the region.
The J&K despite having immense potential to generate hydroelectricity couldn’t do much during the past seven decades as the Kashmir centric politicians, who ruled the erstwhile state, played politics over the generation of electricity too. There was a time when the political parties in Kashmir were demanding that NHPC should handover the projects owned by the company to Jammu and Kashmir government. Peoples Democratic Party and National Conference and other political formations were trying to build a narrative that these power projects belong to J&K and the NHPC should return these, but the Centre had made it clear that no power projects will be returned.
When these parties were in power they never focussed on harnessing the hydro potential of J&K but just used slogans to feed the people. Had these leaders focussed on making J&K self-reliant they would have worked for it.
Since the day J&K has been turned into a union territory, many things have changed the biggest change that has occurred is that entire focus has shifted towards development and wiping out the corruption from the system.
All the processes have got expedited after Manoj Sinha has taken over as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. He has infused new life into the administration. His policy is clear that people first, everything later.
The transition of J&K into a union territory is proving out to be a boon for the region, which has remained caught in conflicts for the past 30-years. The ones who were provided with all privileges and incentives to rule J&K in the past tried raking up the issues which did not fall in their domain. Kashmir centric rulers always wanted to keep their chair safe. For them other issues were not a priority. But how the things are shaping up now prove it beyond doubt that politicians paid little attention towards governance and tried to keep people busy by selling dreams and illusions.
