Defeats Rattle PAGD
2/9/2021 12:14:35 AM
Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD)—an amalgam of Kashmir centric parties—failing to make any impact during the ongoing elections to head District Development Council boards is an indication that the conglomerate has crumbled.
During the past few days elections for the posts of chairmen have been held in Srinagar, Shopian, Kupwara, Budgam and Kulgam. Barring Kulgam, the PAGD candidates have not won anywhere. Successive defeats have rattled the PAGD leadership. National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah had reacted sharply alleging that the administration is helping other parties to win these elections.
The cracks within the PAGD were visible soon after the amalgam started distributing tickets among the candidates. At that point of time the smaller parties had accused the National Conference of bagging the lion’s share and ignoring the other parties. After the results of the DDC polls were declared and PAGD collectively won 110 seats, the NC emerged as the single largest party in the conglomerate by securing 67 DDC constituencies. The NC leaders instead of projecting it as the win of the PAGD claimed that it’s party’s victory. The declaration of results was followed by the Peoples Conference pulling out from the amalgam as it leaders accused the NC of fielding proxy candidates and backstabbing it.
At present the PAGD comprises of the NC, Peoples Democratic Party and few small parties. The PAGD leaders did not even meet once to discuss the modalities for the elections for the posts of chairmen of the DDC boards. When the Peoples Conference pulled out from the amalgam none of the PAGD constituents, especially the NC, didn’t make any effort to keep the conglomerate intact. The cracks which had appeared in the early stages have widened with the passage of time. At present none of the top leaders of the amalgam are even at talking terms to each other.
The winning candidates who have shifted their loyalties are blaming the NC and PDP leaders for the mess. They have opted for greener pastures to remain relevant.
Emergence of Apni Party led by Altaf Bukhari and it winning DDC boards in Shopian and Srinagar districts has proven it beyond doubt that NC and PDP are facing a tough competition and nothing is going to be easy for them. The PAGD seems to have hit a dead end and chances of it getting revived look bleak.
