Kashmir centric rulers neglected Jammu monuments | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 12: The ancient monuments in Jammu province have faced utter neglect since decades due to Kashmir centric policy of the former rulers. People of Jammu are hoping that with J&K’s transition into a union territory and change in dispensation the ancient sites and monuments that were left unattended by the Kashmir based politicians will get due attention and separate funds will be earmarked for maintaining and developing these sites. According to the latest details the historical monuments/ sites of Jammu province have been clubbed under Srinagar Circle. As per data of Tourism Department, an updated list of list of monuments under the jurisdiction of Archaeological Survey of India Srinagar Circle has 56 monuments but only 15 of them are in Jammu region, while 41 are in Kashmir. These fifteen centrally protected monuments in Jammu include Ancient Fort Akhnoor, Ambaran, Ancient Temple Billawar, Rock Carving of Devi riding a lion (Basohli), Rock Carving of Sitala, Narada, Brahma Basohli, Visveshvara temple Basohli, Trilochan Nath temple Mahandera, Ancient site Babour (Thalora), Temple of Devi Bhagwati Babour Thalora, Ancient temples (Nand Babour), Group of Krimchi temples, Ancient Fort attributed to Raja Suchet Singh Ramnagar and Ancient places attributed to Raja Suchet Singh Ramnagar. Recently the Union Ministry of Culture and Tourism furnished details about the expenditure on centrally protected monuments/sites across the country. The Ministry also provided details about the expenditure incurred on conservation, preservation and annual maintenance of all monuments and on Srinagar circle a total of Rs. 215 Lakhs, 175 Lakhs, 155 Lakhs and 100 Lakhs have been allocated in the year 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21 (upto January 2021). “As per simple estimates the Jammu based monuments have got peanuts out of these funds and maximum of the funds have been spent on Kashmir based monuments/sites”, an official said, adding that if Jammu had a separate circle it would have helped a great deal. The official further said it is a general understanding that Jammu faced discrimination and the tourist places of Jammu have not got desired space and tourist flow due to shortage of basic facilities. “The tourist destinations in Jammu have the potential to attract tourists but have not been explored and those have been explored were not promoted so far. Special emphasis should be laid on these places, the tourism potential of Jammu should also be tapped”, the official said. |
