Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 18: In a last moment twist, the National Conference and Congress alliance in Kishtwar District managed to win Chairperson and Vice Chairperson elections for the District Development Council.
Moreover, the alliance emerged victorious despite hiccups and glitches of cross voting by a NC member and rebellion by a Congress member.
After postponement of elections on February 13due to lack of quorum following skipping of the meeting by 3 BJP members, a NC rebel and an independent member from Marwah, the elections for electing DDC Chairperson and Vice Chairperson were rescheduled for today in which Pooja Bhandari of Nation Conference managed to defeat Apni Party & BJP backed joint candidate Shareefa Begum (NC rebel) with the margin of two votes.
Pooja bagged 8 votes which include 6 NC votes and 2 votes from Congress while Shareefa Begum managed to secure 6 votes that included the 3 votes of BJP, one of herself, one from Congress rebel Hans Raj and an independent candidate from Marwah Sheikh Zafarullah.
Surprisingly NC, Congress Vice Chairperson candidate Saima Shabir Lone though managed to win the election in a triangular contest, but as compared to 8 votes secured by Pooja Bhandari for Chairperson post, Saima Lone got only 7 votes that included 5 votes from National Conference and two from Congress including that of herself.
Saima Lone defeated BJP-Apni Party backed candidate Hans Raj who won the DDC elections from Drabshalla block on Congress ticket but ditched the Congress party at last minute and filled his nomination papers for the post of Vice Chairperson as a joint candidate for BJP and Apni Party.
Hans Raj managed to get only 5 votes that included 3 votes from BJP one from NC rebel (now Apni Party) and that of himself.
Similarly Sheikh Zafarullah managed to get two votes, one that of himself, and other believes to be given by NC rebel candidate from Warwan Abdul Razak who contested the elections as an independent candidate, but was holding the post of Block President National Conference Warwan.
Speaking after the election results, both Pooja Thakur and Saima Lone expressed their gratitude to party leadership as well as to the people and councilors who voted for them.
They both assured to work for the welfare of the people and reiterated to work jointly towards upliftment of socio-economic condition of the poor people of Kishtwar.
"This is victory of democracy. Our candidates were being constantly put under witch hunt. In the end all DDC members held their nerves by not succumbing to official machinery tactics and ensure the victory of both the candidates," said Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo.
Without naming any official Kichloo thanked all as well as those who left no stone unturned to help Apni Party and BJP to poach their members by applying various tactics.
"The victory is that of secular forces. NC, Congress would like to come together in future as well," said Congress leader Ghulam Mohammad Saroori.
Both Saroori and Kichloo, however, refused to discuss the issue of cross voting and just said, "All's well that ends well."
Later, Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Ashok Sharma administered oath of office to Pooja Bhandari as Chairperson and Saima Shabir Lone as Vice Chairperson of District Development Council Kishtwar, here in a ceremony held in the Conference Hall of DC office Kishtwar.
