Summer-like weather continues in Kashmir, night temp settles above normal

Srinagar, Mar 4: People continued to enjoy summer-like weather as the maximum temperature remained several degrees above normal on Thursday due to sunshine in the summer capital, Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley, where another spell of snow and rain is predicted over the weekend.
Meanwhile, the night temperature improved across the valley due to overcast conditions and settled above normal.
A Met department spokesperson said that the weather will remain mainly dry in the plains while very light snow and rain could occur at one or two places in the upper reaches in the valley.
However, he said a fresh Western Disturbance (WD), which originated from the Arabian Sea and is approaching the region though Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit the region on Saturday.
“The system created by this WD is expected to be strong and could result in light to moderate snowfall at most places in the valley over the weekend,” he added.
Much to the delight of tourists, the weather on Thursday remained pleasant at Gulmarg, which received heavy snowfall last week. Gulmarg, which is known for its ski slopes are quality of snow, is witnessed huge rush of tourists. The ski resort was the only place in the valley where the night temperature settled below freezing point. Against minus 2.4 degree recorded on Wednesday, the night temperature in Gulmarg settled at minus 1 degree, which is over 3 degree above normal. “Tourists were enjoying different snow related activities on a sunny Thursday in the ski resort,” a hotelier from Gulmarg told .
He said most of the hotels in the ski resort are fully booked till April ending.
After witnessing an improvement of about a degree in the night temperature due to overcast conditions, people woke up to a chilly Thursday morning in Srinagar. However, as the day progressed, bright sunshine greeted people, resulting in major improvement in the day temperature in the city, where people were seen basking in the sun in parks, balconies and open fields. Against 2.8 degree recorded on Wednesday, the night temperature in Srinagar settled at 3.9 degree, which is about a degree above normal. The maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday in the city was 7 degree above normal.
The night temperature at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, improved about 2 degree from Wednesday and settled at 2.3 degree, which is a degree above normal. The weather during the day remained pleasant in the resort due to sunshine.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kukernag improved and settled at 2.2 degrees, 2.3 degrees and 3.4 degrees, respectively.
