Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 1: The Forest Department seized four trucks carrying Khair trees at Pouni in Reasi district, sources told Early Times.
They said that the vehicles were seized for violating an official order which clearly stated that no cutting of trees will be allowed after March 31, 2021.
The circular in possession of this newspaper states: "It's hereby enjoined upon all the DFOs of Khair divisions to issue necessary transportation permission of Kahir billets and firewood extracted of the felling year 2019-20 to outside the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir upto 31st March, 2021 in pursuance to the circular instructions vide this office No. CCF-J/Lease/Khair-Gen/F-219/797-809 dated 5/03/2021. No further extension in this regard will be granted."
Sources said that the vehicles that were seized were coming from Talwara area.
"It's strange that
despite clear cut instructions to
DFOs not to allow the vehicles carrying Khair trees to move after March 31, 2021 these trucks carrying the Khair trees were allowed to proceed from Talwara area," sources added.
Principal Chief Conservator Forest Mohit Gera said, "We are verifying how these vehicles were allowed to move along with Khair trees after the deadline was over. We are looking into the matter and guilty won't be spared."
It's in place to mention here that Early Times in its Thursday's edition had carried a detailed story under the headline "Forest Deptt orders enquiry into illegal felling of Khair trees in Pouni".
The Department had ordered an enquiry into illegal felling of Khair trees after the complaints about contractors allegedly in connivance with the officials were cutting the trees in the areas where no permission was granted.
The Divisional Forest Officer Reasi had said, "Our teams have reached the spot and probe is on to ascertain how many Khair trees have been cut illegally. I will be submitting the final report to my senior officers soon."
