Helpless Mehbooba can’t save PDP from ‘extinction’
4/4/2021 1:03:23 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 3: Amid exodus of all senior leaders, former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti is finding it difficult to save Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). The ‘leftover’ in the PDP are worried over future of the party and they are asking each other “Will Mehbooba save party from extinction”?
Although exodus of senior leaders started within five months after demise of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed but party is facing worst ever crises since June 2018 when BJP withdrew support of the coalition government headed by Mehbooba Mufti.
“Question is not of stopping senior leaders from quitting the party but the biggest challenge before the president is to save it from extinction”, a senior PDP leader told The Early Times, wishing anonymity.
He pointed out that not only ‘annoyed’ leaders have resigned from the party but close-aide of Mehbooba Mufti like Peerzada Mansoor has ditched her at this crucial time.
“Party president has not accepted that her close-aide like Peerzada Mansoor would not quit the party but also join Peoples’ Conference”, he said and revealed that it was all due to immature decisions of party president that PDP is at the verge of extinction in J&K.
PDP is now only a coterie of drawing room politicians having no connects with the grass-root workers.
“It is very unfortunate that within a span of just three years the PDP is facing identity crises because almost all senior leaders have quitted the party”, he said, while listing names of leaders who have resigned from the party after 2018.
After breaking PDP-BJP alliance on June 19, 2018, senior leaders were appeared to be in a hurry to say good-bye to the party.
In the month of June, 2018 , PDP had five MPs (three Lok Sabha, two Rajya Sabha members) 28 MLAs and 14 MLCs in its kitty. There was also a strong grass-root level organization structure of the party at that time but as of now only a couple of former legislators are left within the party.
