NC leader wants Abdullahs to sacrifice power!

SRINAGAR, Apr 10: In a shocking development, a senior leader of the National Conference has asked the party to sacrifice power "putting the NC leadership in a tight spot."
The leader, who hails from central Kashmir's Budgam district, had been having strained relations with the NC after the abrogation of special status on August 5, 2019. Though over the months, the leader has gone for "patch up", he remains "firm on the initial stand of the party with regard to the protection of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir."
At a recently held event that was attended by the senior party leaders, the leader "put the ball in the court of the Abdullahs."
He said if the NC was so concerned towards the abrogation of the special status for the "larger cause of the people of Jammu and Kashmir", the party should sacrifice power unless special status is restored.
Sources said the other NC leaders could be seen feeling uncomfortable as he was speaking.
The leader from Budgam who has also remained a minister in the past, said in the absence of statehood, a Chief Minister would not be powerful enough to execute decisions as the Lieutenant Governor would hold more power.
The NC leader went on to say that let Peoples Conference President Sajad Lone or Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party President Altaf Bukhari take power but that NC should stay away from the chair if the party was really concerned about the abrogation of the special status.
Observers said the NC leader has put the party to litmus test. "See if the National Conference feels that abrogation of the special status is against the interests of Jammu and Kashmir then the party should work exactly as per what he(leader from Budgam) said. Otherwise NC is doing drama to come to power and nothing else," said a political observer.
Sources said the speech of the NC leader has put the party in a "catch 22 situation" situation, where the leadership looks divided over the issue of coming to power.
