EARLY TIMES REPORT

ANANTNAG, Apr 20: Negating the official claims, a senior official at Government Medical College Anantnag on Tuesday said that they don't have any ICU bed reserved for the symptomatic covid-19 patients.
“So far as we haven’t designated any ICU ward for COVID-19 patients as we don’t have staff for running ICU,” Dr Iqbal, Medical Superintendent of the Associated Hospital of Government Medical College Anantnag told Early Times.
Dr Iqbal said that Medical-Surgical is functional at GMC Anantnag however no ICU unit has been made functional for symptomatic covid-19 patients as they don’t have the required staff.
“We have written to the Government multiple times but the staff required for making the ICU operational was never hired,” he said. Dr Iqbal said that they have six high end ventilators and six bedded ICU will get functional the moment staff like technicians, nurses, medical officers and anesthetists are hired.
“As of now we can incubate a patient as high flow oxygen is available but because of non-availability of ICU we have to shift the patients to Srinagar for treatment,” he said, adding the Government has declared Government Medical College Anantnag level-2 hospital.
He however said that COVID-19 related SOP’s are being implemented and requested to stop visiting the hospital ‘unnecessarily’
He said that they have made high flow, low flow and normal flow oxygen for covid-19 infected patients.
“We have around two dozen portable ventilators available that can be used for shifting patients to Srinagar hospitals,” he added.
As reported earlier, the Health and Medical Education Department claims to have reserved 37 ICU beds of COVID-19 infected patients in various hospitals of South Kashmir including Government Medical College Anantnag.
Government claims that Medical College Anantnag has just six (6) ICU beds, Trauma Hospital Bijbehara has 7 ICU beds, and District Hospital Kulgam has 10 ICU beds reserved for COVID-19 patients.
In Pulwama, the government claims that district hospital Pulwama has 10 ICU beds while as Shopian district has 4 ICU beds for COVID-19 patients. The population of South Kashmir is said to be over 30 lakh.
