							  | | Covid deaths going unabated in GMC Jammu | | | | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, May 2: Unabated Covid deaths in Jammu’s premier health institute- the Government Medical College Hospital (GMC) Jammu, questioned tall claims of the authorities to improve infrastructure in this institute.
Although GMC caters to the need of all the 10 districts of Jammu province, no serious effort was made to improve infrastructure in this hospital. On Sunday out of a total of 41 Covid deaths, 15 were reported only from GMC where authorities claimed to have provided adequate infrastructure.
During the first wave of Coronavirus in the year 2020, patients had lost their lives due to non-availability of treatment but authorities appeared to be having not learned any lesson.
As reported by the media, due to the causal approach of the higher-ups of the Health & Medical Education Department J&K, funds to the tune of Rs 32.4 crore received from the Government of India for initiating mandatory infrastructure work under 10% EWS quota of MBBS seats lapsed twice in the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu.
The National Medical Commission had approved and allotted on 21st June 2019, 30 MBBS seats each to GMCs of Jammu and Srinagar and 25 to seats to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar for the academic session 2019-20 under 10% Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota.
For getting a grant of recognition of 30 MBBS seats (under EWS quota), GMC Jammu had to raise additional infrastructure as per National Medical Council of India (NMC) norms but authorities failed to do so due to the casual approach.
