Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, May 6: The administration has blamed the residents of Srinagar of poor response vis-à-vis COVID-19 vaccination, but the truth of the matter that on ground there is shortage of vaccines with the appointments in this regard getting cancelled and that too not once, but more than one time.
A family from Rawalpora had fixed the appointment of vaccination on May 3, but the same could not materialize up to this date. The family went to the Maternity Hospital at Sanat Nagar but could not get vaccinated due to varying reasons. At the end of the day the family especially the elderly ones are worried given the scare due to COVID-19.
“The authorities at the Maternity Hospital had fixed the vaccination of my parents on May 3, but the same could not be done on the scheduled date. When enquired, the authorities said that there is a shortage of vaccines. We contacted the hospital twice after that but still then the vaccination could not take place and I don’t see any hope in near future,” said one of the young members of Rawalpora family on the condition of anonymity. This person said that he was asked to visit the Maternity Hospital today for his vaccination, but was informed through an SMS (Short Messaging Service) that the appointment for vaccination has been cancelled. He goes on to say that it may take weeks’ together for him to get vaccinated.
It is not only at this hospital that the vaccination process has hit a roadblock but the situation is the same at other health facilities. People who had registered for vaccination had to leave disappointed and dejected after the authorities told them there is a shortage of vaccines at the centre.
“Since people in scores are lining up at different places for registration purposes there are chances that such places may turn out to be mass spreaders of Corona Virus at the end of the day. If God forbids that happens then the situation would go out of control and it would be difficult to manage things,” said Mohammad Aslam, a resident of Chanapora.
It would be in place to mention here that Srinagar has fared badly with respect to vaccination of the targeted population with less than one third of the population in the age group of above 45 years being vaccinated so far. Shortage of vaccines at the designated vaccination centres is one of the main reasons for the poor response.
At some of the designated vaccination centres people carried out protest against the authorities for their failure to provide vaccines to them. These people protested saying that although their appointment was fixed on a scheduled date the vaccination could not take place primarily due to shortage of vaccines.
