Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 16: The COVID-19 vaccinations program in Kashmir has practically stopped as zero doses were administered on Sunday.
According to a health bulletin released by Health and Medical Education Jammu and Kashmir, all ten districts of Kashmir reported zero vaccination. On Saturday, only 504 people were vaccinated across the Valley.
Officials dealing with the vaccination program told Early Times that the Union Territory was facing acute shortage of vaccines like other parts of the country.
"The supplies we had received stand exhausted. Last week we didn’t receive any supply and hence we don't have vaccines available currently,” an officer said. He however wished anonymity. The officer claimed that the Jammu and Kashmir government hadn’t yet even floated global tenders for the procurement of vaccines.
“There are definitely strong voices who are demanding that the government must float global tenders for the procurement of vaccines but as of now the administration hasn’t taken a decision on it,” he added.
However, a JKMSL official claimed that they supplied 92480 doses of vaccines to the Health Department on 12th of this month.
“On 12th of this month we provided 92480 doses of vaccines to the J&K health department but I don’t know anything about its consumption,” he said, pleading not to be quoted.
Many people who visited hospitals and vaccination centers are returning home empty hands.
So far, Jammu and Kashmir said that it has vaccinated 2814272 people mostly aged above 45 years.
Dr Saleem-Ur-Rehman, who heads COVID-19 vaccination Program in Jammu and Kashmir wasn’t available for a comment as he didn’t respond to repeated telephone calls.
