EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, May 17: Dogra Swabhiman Sangathan (DSS) Kissan Cell urged upon the UT govt to spare a thought for the hapless farmers of Jammu region who have been hit hard by the nature twice within a week in which they have lost 70 to 80% of their wheat crop in Rajouri-Poonch while mango fruit besides walnut, apple, nashpati, orange and lemon crop also experienced extensive damages all over the Jammu region. Chairman of DSS Kissan Cell, KP Singh said that the extent of damages to the harvested/un-harvested wheat crop and seasonal fruits in Jammu region is phenomenal. Expressing serious concern over extraordinary damages caused by the recent and recurrent rain and hail storms during the deadly corona pandemic in Jammu region, Singh said that such grievous situation has never occurred before in the recent past. Calling it a double whammy of nature, the Corona pandemic and nature’s fury, he prophesied bad days for the farmers. Singh brought it to the notice of Sharda Bahu, DDC member Akhnoor requesting her to bring it to the notice of DDC Chairman and UT administration. He also appealed the Lt Governor to take note of the crop and fruits damage and initiate assessment at war footing to pay the compensation at a fast pace. He reiterated that Revenue authorities, departments of Agriculture and Horticulture along with Disaster Management Teams should immediately fan out in rural areas to assess the losses. Requirement to go into the lengthy procedural exercise of reports/assessment, as has been the practice, may be waived off by the LG due to pandemic.
