Another warning bell | | | Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, another viral infection “Black Fungus” has raised its ugly head. Till date more than 200 people have died and 8800 cases of this deadly disease have been reported across the country. J&K has also reported one “Black Fungus” death. The second wave of COVID-19 has hit Jammu hard. The mortality rate in Jammu region due to COVID-19 is higher than Kashmir. The administration led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has sought a report from the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu about the high death rate in the hospitals. The government has provided best possible facilities to the GMC associated hospitals in Jammu and no stone is being left unturned to ensure that people don’t suffer, despite that patients and their attendants are complaining about the lack of facilities. This needs to be looked into. The emergence of “Black Fungus” has pressed a panic button. People are worried as the 40-year old man who died at GMC Jammu due to this deadly virus had recovered from COVID-19 and had even tested negative. The experts are of the opinion that use of steroids among the COVID-19 patients and them being put on oxygen for a long time could be the reasons for the emergence of the new disease which can turn into an epidemic if not controlled now. The government needs to create awareness about the “Black Fungus” and to do so a special campaign should be launched across the union territory. The symptoms of this deadly virus need to be publicized and the people need to be informed about the precautions they can take to keep themselves safe. The COVID-19 vaccination drive has been intensified but still more needs to be done so that herd immunity is developed. The “Black Fungus” is affecting the people who have fought the COVID-19 successfully. The recovered patients, especially the ones who are diabetic need to take extra precautions and care. The COVID-19 is there to stay with us and the post Covid complications are emerging as a new challenge that needs to be handled with proper care and caution. One hopes that the helmsmen take a note of the warnings being issued by the experts about the emergence of “Black Fungus” and take enough steps in advance to prevent this new disease from consuming more lives. |
