Udhampur, May 25: Farmers at village Chari Sallian near Udhampur Railway Station are bearing the brunt of a deep drain flowing by the side of their fields as during rainy season flooded drain pushes the gushing water in the fields thereby spoiling the crops there.
The poor farmers are bearing due to the unplanned infrastructure for the last about 20 years. “Few days back the dirty water from the Nallah entered my fields and spoiled the crop there,” Sukhdev, 56, a farmer said adding that the authorities should do something in this regard immediately.
Sources informed that few months back the concerned department floated a tender for the construction of 90 meter Nallah, but the contactor only completed 60 meters and left 30 meters as it is due to non ability of funds.
They also said that every year about 20 Kanal crops is destroyed as dirty water from the Nallah enters the fields during flash floods but the authorities never paid any compensation to the affected farmers.
“Concerned revenue officials visit the spot every time to note the losses but no compensation has been given to any farmer till fate for the damages,” —another farmer said.
More farmers said that as there is no source of income for them and they are already facing financial crises due to second wave of COVID-19, the authorities should take steps so that they may not suffer any crop loss due to flooded Nallah.
They urged Deputy Commissioner Udhampur, Indu Kanwal Chib to alert the concerned authority for compensation of losses to the victim farmers and start work on remaining Nallah.
When contacted Executive Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control, Nanak Chand said due to non-availability of funds work was suspended and as they receive funds from higher ups the work will be restarted.
