BARAMULLA, June 21: A Top LeT commander was among three militants killed in an overnight gunfight in Sopore town of this north Kashmir district.
According to police, the gunfight started on Sunday late night at Gund Brath area of Sopore town with the killing three Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, one of them a foreigner.
“There were specific intelligence reports about the presence of militants in Gund Brath areas of Sopore town, after which a joint team of security forces including Army, Police, SoG and CRPF launched a massive cordon and search operation”, said a police official.
The official said that, ‘all the entry and exit points were sealed with concertina wire, so that nobody can run away from the cordon, adding the searches were carried out, after which the hiding militants fired upon security forces that was retaliated by the security forces’. After zeroing in at the particular house, where the hidding militants were holded up, even though they were told to surrender before the security forces, however they didn’t listen and fired upon security forces, the official added. He further said that in this encounter, a top militant commander of LeT outfit Mudasir Pandith @ Muda and other two militants including Khursheed Ahmad Mir of Brath Kalan and a foreigner Abdullah @Asrar were killed.
Police sources confirmed that three AK 47 rifles, one pistol and a satellite phone and other material were recovered from the slain militants. Sources said that for a short period internet services were snapped in the area as a precautionary measure to avoid law and order situation.
As per police records, all the killed militants were part of a group involved in various terror crimes and several cases were registered against them including attack at Municipal office Sopore on 29-03-2021 in which two Municipal Councilors and one police personnel were killed.
They were also involved in an attack on a police party of Police Station Sopore on 12-06-2021 at Main Chowk Sopore in which two police personnel and two civilians were killed and two more police personnel and two civilians were injured.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said that, It is a big success for police and security forces adding, general public of Sopore area will get respite from militant incidents and recruitment of new youths into militancy.
