Early Times Report

Rajouri, July 12: The tall claims of the Jal Shakti Department Rajouri have stood exposed of providing clean water as the residents of around 5-6 panchayats of tehsil Thannamandi of district Rajouri are being supplied contaminated water leading to health issues. Sources informed that the PHE water tank situated in village Plangar was constructed in 1981 is totally unclean, full of sludge and dead birds can be seen in the water and the same water is supplied to these panchayats.
“The cleaning of this particular water tank has not been done for a long and some of the residents of this area have retired now that this tank was constructed but people have no other option to drink this contaminated water,” residents said.
They further said that although the department gets funds for cleaning the tank after every one or two years, this fund has not been used to clean this water tank.
People travel long distances to bring water from bawali.(Natural Resources) People alleged that whenever they approach the concerned Executive Engineer Jal Shakti regarding this problem, they are given several excuses of having no funds for its cleaning and at times, officials threaten them for lodging complaints and highlighting the issue.
They further said that during this COVID pandemic, the centre as well as JK UT administration appealed to people to maintain hygiene but on the contrary they are forced to consume filthy water. When Early Times contacted the Executive Engineer Mushtaq Chowdhary, he blamed the local residents for creating an unhygienic condition of the water tank.
He alleged that some residents have deliberately thrown dead birds in the water tank to defame the department. He said that an inquiry will be initiated to find out the facts.
