Preserve symbols of Dogra heritage
8/9/2021 12:14:02 AM
The Jammu and Kashmir Government moving a proposal to convert Mubarak Mandi complex into a heritage hotel has surprised many people.
The Mubarak Mandi is a symbol of Jammu's heritage and it cannot be ruined. There are 25 buildings in the complex and all these are heritage structures.
It appears that the present dispensation is unaware of the fact that the proposal to turn Mubarak Mandi into a heritage hotel was rejected by a foreign expert, who was hired to prepare a feasibility report. He had made it clear that it cannot be done.
During the past few months, the J & K administration has taken decisions that have not gone well with the people of Jammu. The "New Liquor Policy," calling of "Darbar Move" practice, allowing outsiders to takeover mining business, depriving Sikhs, Mahajans and Kathris from buying and selling agricultural land have annoyed the people of Jammu.
Bureaucrats are imposing their writ without even giving a second thought about how the people will react and what repercussions their decisions can have.
By announcing the "New Liquor Policy" the government deprived hundreds of locals in Jammu region from earning their livelihood, by handing over mining business to non-locals, natives were hit. Calling off Darbar Move practice has hit the business community in Jammu region below the belt. Sikhs, Mahajans and Kathris too are annoyed. So nothing has been straight. Everything seems twisted. Jammuties feel that the helmsmen are least bothered about the aspirations of the masses.
Bureaucrats, who are calling the shots, should realize that nationalist people of Jammu have always supported each and every move of the government.
When the Centre announced its decision toi abrogate J&K's special status and merged it completely within the Union of India, people of Jammu celebrated the decision with a hope that the 70-year old discrimination with the region would end. But during the past two years things have not gone in a way in which people expected them to go.
People handling the affairs should bear in mind that they are hurting the sentiments of Jammu people by their arbitrary decisions. Mubarak Mandi is a symbol of Dogra heritage and it's a protected monument. It needs to be preserved. No one can be allowed to dismantle the symbols of Jammu's culture and its legacy.
