EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Aug 27: The lives of students and staff of Government Boys High School (GBHS), Ghass Mandi, are in grave risk as the building housing the educational institution is in dilapidated condition.
More than 75-year-old two-storied building belonging to the Custodian Department J&K, is situated adjacent to the landmark Kanak Mandi and Rajendra Bazaar areas in the heart of old Jammu city. The building of GBHS, Ghass Mandi has become unsafe over the years and is almost on the verge of collapsing, yes it could happen anytime, as its pathetic condition urgently needs major repair and restoration which is being constantly overlooked by the authorities concerned.
The School Education Department (SED) as well as the owner of the building, Custodian Department, have not shown any eagerness to provide much needed facelift to the worn out building.
Rather both these departments keep on neglecting the dilapidated condition of the school building which is now staring at an imminent risk of collapsing.
The school building bears cracks, plaster has fallen off and iron rods visible.
Wishing anonymity the teaching and other staff of the school say they had a narrow escape when a portion of a roof collapsed few days back.
"The building is very old. It is a Custodian property, so its construction must have taken place before 1947 which means the structure is most likely more than 75 years old while the school is also operational here for more than 50 years," they said.
"Nobody knows when this building would collapse completely," they added. Ceiling of the building has also gotten weak due to seepage and deteriorated with the passage of time and needs immediate reconstruction. “Nothing is more shameful than that the students being forced to study in such buildings, which pose threat to their lives. This attitude of the government is condemnable.
This building can collapse any time and is awaiting a tragedy,” said Vishal Gupta, a cloth merchant, who owns a shop in nearby Kanak Mandi area.
He said, “The government without any further delay should provide funds for improving the condition of the building than waiting for an untoward incident.”
