Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 5: Even as the government of Jammu and Kashmir flaunts of promoting cultural activities across the union territory, the Kala Kendra in Jammu, which is the hub of such activities in the winter capital is set to lose space.
Even though the Jammu city has huge chunk of open government land, the administration has decided to take away four kanals of prized land from the Kala Kendra for construction of official building of another department.
Sources said the decision in this regard was taken at a high level meeting wherein it was decided that four kanals of prized land in the backyard of the Kala Kendra would be used for the construction of the office of the Archives department.
Sources said the matter was discussed even threadbare at a meeting chaired by Divisional Commissioner Jammu on September 30. Experts on culture said it was another “invasion on the cultural heritage of Jammu” even as they accused the government of “not respecting the wishes of the Dogra community.”
“Kala Kendra is the repository of the cultural traditions of the Dogra community and it was given a good amount of land so that the same is used for promotion of the art, culture and literature in a futuristic way but giving away four kanals of land to Archives Department means that this Kala Kendra will loose its sheen in the coming times and one day will need to be shifted elsewhere,” said a delegation of Jammuites, who are experts on cultural traditions of the City of Temples.
They said the government decision would leave no space for expansion of the Kala Kendra in future. “The government decision sounds like creating an urban slum at the Kala Kendra but at the cost of the cultural aspirations of the people of Jammu,” they added.
The experts said “ideally the government should have taken the people associated with the art and culture into confidence before taking such a decision.”
“But it seems that instead of the people who are paramount in the democracy the babus are taking decisions as per their whims and fancies to uphold the babu raaj,” they added.
When contacted a senior official confirmed to the Early Times that the land measuring four kanals would be used for construction of the Archives department.
He however refuted the public allegations saying the development was in the interest of the people of Jammu.
