Elections and the Mundane Issues
Omkar Dattatary11/16/2021 10:26:56 PM
Democracy is a meaningless proposition without the elections and the elections general, state level and the bye elections are going on continuously. Besides these elections the elections of the panchayats and municipalities go on continuously. So far so good but these elections are fought not on the issues and matters which interest the common man .
However the sad commentary is that the elections in our democracy are held and fought on non issues and emotive issues thus diminishing the value of the elections.
Thus the elections in our democracy are held and fought not on the mundane issues of bare existence but on the emotive issues which have no meaning for the general people.
Therefore our elections are becoming meaningless for our people as these are far away from the issues which are dear to the general public. So the partisan issues and the communal and emotional issues have unfortunately become the basis of the election fights in our country. Therefore the issues of bread and butter and livelihood are relegated to background and the emotive and communal issues have become the part and parcel of our democracy curtsy the elections. In fact the elections have eroded our democracy and democratic institutions of their value.
The elections in a democracy are the means to an end and are not an end as the welfare of the people is the end of all the elections via government formation. There is no controversy on the fact that the elections are the soul of a democracy but our elections have been reduced to ill actions thanks to the fact that the elections are not fought on the basic issues and the mundane issues of bare existence.
The elections should be fought on the issues of the Roti, Kapada and Makaan and on the issues of Bijli, Pani and Sadhak and not on the emotive and communal issues but in our country the elections are ought on the non issues and emotive issues only which have eroded our elections of all sheen and value.
The political parties of all hues and colors and without any exception fight the elections only on the emotional and communal issues and do not give stress on the developmental and economic issues which are more beneficial for the common electorate. Thus the various political parties whether of the national or regional standing are only busy to rake the emotional , caste religious and communal issues in the elections and underestimate the real issues and problems which matter most important to the people and it is their deliverance which the people want.
But unfortunately our political bosses and parties are only banking on the emotional issues and communal issues in the elections and are as such raking such issues only which are far from the real issues and problems of the people.
The need is that the elections should be fought on the mundane issues. Thus the elections should be fought on the issue of the clean drinking water, the good schooling and efficient health services and therefore the elections should be fought on the provision of the hospitals and schooling of the children and not on the basis of non issues.
Therefore the developmental issues and not the mandir and masjid issue should be raised in the elections.
In fact the issues of provision of employment and controlling of the rising prices should the main issue in the election fight and not the emotional and communal issues. Therefore the political parties should fight the election battles on the economic and development issues which concern to the people very much.
The non issues in our elections are because of the fact that we have given first preference to the adult franchise than the education and the results are very much before our eyes and we have lopsided development and our elections are being fought on the non issues. Thus proper emphasis should be given to education and secondary to the adult franchise.
But we have erred as we have given the first preference to elections and not to the education. We should strive for the successful democracy and for this we should give first preference to education and secondary to the elections and then only our tryst with democracy will be successful otherwise not. Therefore provision of education should be given its due place and it is the educated people who will be able to vote judiciously in the elections and it is education only by which our political parties will be able to distinguish between the mundane issues and the non issues. Thus our democracy will be successful only when we will give proper education to the people. So we have to give proper emphasis to the education of our people so that we are able to elect honest and good persons to man government. Therefore we should make the elections more meaningful so that the real issues and problems of the people are the issues in our elections and the superficial issues are relegated to the background.
Thus the real issues of bread and butter , the issue of the employment, Provision of the electricity and health services, good roads ,schooling of the children and controlling of the inflation should be the issues in the elections. But unfortunately in our democracy the elections are fought on the emotional and religious issues than on the developmental issues confronting the people.
Hence it is necessary that the elections in our country are fought on the real and mundane issues and not on the religious issues and emotional issues.
Since our country is heading for the elections in the five states in just a few months in 2022 and thereafter the general elections in the year 2024 and all the political parties are preparing for the race of elections.
Thus are the political parties of the incumbent governments and the opposition parties as well raising the non issues in elections which are not related with the lives of the people.
So the political parties without any exception are raking the non issues and the only emotive issues in the elections which are not required by the people. Therefore it is in the fitness of things that the real issues and problems of the people should become the issues in the elections and not communal, parochial, sectarian, caste and religious issues.
Our tryst with democracy will be successful only when our political parties and political bosses will differentiate between the real and non issues and the real and mundane issues will only figure in the elections.
Thus, developmental issues and the economic ones should become the issues in the elections rather than the sensitive issues which have no meaning in the lives of the people. Thus the heading of this write up.
