Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 17: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) under 'Farmer First' Programme launched wheat demonstrations-cum-seed production programme during Rabi season 2021. The programme has been conceptualized by Prof JP Sharma, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-J and implemented in adopted villages of Samba district, including villages such as Uttar Behni, Balore, Sarain, Tund, Darui and Sataah .
The programme of Frontline Demonstrations (FLDs) are planned under the project entitled "Exploring economic opportunities for farmers of kandi villages through application of proven scientific technologies" funded by Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi. More than 500 farm families have been involved under the programme for achieving maximum possible Seed Replacement Rate for wheat crop, over an area of more than 100 hectares. Under the participatory seed production programme of SKUAST-Jammu, farmers are being encouraged to produce seeds, instead of grains for generating more income per unit of land. University is also supporting farmers to get hands-on-training on seed production and management.
Dr Pardeep Wali, Associate Director Research & PI of the project elaborated that the efforts are being carried out for the last three years to double the farmers' income through Farmer FIRST project.
Dr RK Srivastava, Assoc. Professor, Agri Engineering presented the plan for water conservation and implementation of rainfed technologies under the project. While discussing the plan of frontline demonstrations-cum-seed production programme, Dr. Pawan Kumar Sharma, Co-PI elaborated the performance of FLDs laid in kharif season by comparing it with yield under traditional plots.
During the programme, the plan for Rabi season was also discussed and various queries made by the farmers were resolved. FLDs and OF's were organized by Neeru Sadotra (Field Assistant), Divya Chand (Field Assistant) and Manmohan Singh under the guidance of Dr Pawan Kumar Sharma Co-PI. Total 100 quintals of wheat seeds were distributed among selected villages under FFP at 100% subsidy so that they can get better produce. More than 40 farmers/ farm women partners under the project attended the programme.
