Night temperature rises above freezing point in Kashmir parts

Srinagar, Nov 24: Night temperature in Kashmir rose above the freezing point across the valley due to cloudy sky but there was no respite in cold wave conditions continued to prevail with unprecedented power cuts adding wovs of the people. Srinagar, which witnesses coldest nights of the season during the past two days was recorded at 0.3 degree Celsius against the minus 2.3 degree Celsius an overall improvement of two degrees in the temperature. However, there was no respite in cold conditions prevailed across with frequent power cuts making life more difficult for the people residing here. The Meteorological Department office said, Weather is most likely to remain cold and dry till ending November across Jammu and Kashmir.
At Airforce stations of Drass, the second coldest place in the world after siberia, the temperature was recorded at minus 8.7 degree Celsius against the minus 12.8 degree Celsius an improvement of about four degrees in night temperature. At Leh it was minus 8.3 against the minus 11.5 degree Celsius a day ago and at Kargil it was recorded as minus 5.8 against the minus 6.5 degree Celsius on Tuesday.
The MeT office said, the tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir was the coldest place in the valley even though the temperature showed an improvement at minus 2.0 degree Celsius against the minus 4.4 degree Celsius, an improvement of over two degree in the night temperature due to overcast sky. Most small water bodies have frozen in Pahalgam due to freezing cold temperatures.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway was recorded at minus 0,6 degree celsius against the minus 2.2 degree Celsius a day ago and at Kokernag it was recorded at minus 0.1 degree celsius against the minus 1.1 degree celsius the previous day.
Ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded the minimum temperature at sub zero against the minus 0.6 degree. Although there was an improvement in the night temperature, but freezing cold conditions remain there with thick fog making it difficult for the tourist to move around.
In frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara the minimum temperature was recorded as minus 0.3 degree celsius against the minus 3.0 degree Celsius recorded yesterday an overall improvement of three degrees in night temperature, the MeT office said.
