11/30/2021 11:22:16 PM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 30: Cold conditions continued in Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, as the mercury plunged further by a few notches with dry conditions prevailing in the two Union Territories, making life miserable for the residents.
A fresh weather advisory by the Meteorological Department says an active Western disturbance of low intensity is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir from December 4 onwards which can cause light to moderate rain and snow at most places in Jammu and Kashmir on December 5.
They said that due to low intensity the weather is unlikely to cause any major snowfall across the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory. Although there are chances of snowfall in plains, however, no significant snow accumulation more than three inches is likely, the MeT said and added, there will be rainfall in the plains.
Meanwhile, higher reaches of the UT would experience about less than a foot and not more than six inches of snow and the day temperature will stay below nine degrees Celsius in Kashmir valley on December 5, the MeT office said.
Meanwhile, there is no let up in cold wave conditions as it further intensified in Kashmir valley with a dip in night temperature as Srinagar recorded minus 1.5 degree Celsius as against the 1.1 degrees Celsius on Monday. Fog covered most of the places in the Valley, including the famous Dal Lake and Boulevard Road.
Ladakh Union Territory was also in the grip of intense cold as Air Force station of Drass recorded minus 11.4 degree Celsius as against 11.2 degrees a day ago, while Leh showed an improvement of two degrees and registered minus 9.7 degree as against the minus 11.8 degrees and Kargil further plunged a few notches recorded at minus 7.4 degree as against minus 7.2 degrees on Monday.
The MeT office said the tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir remained the coldest place in Kashmir valley, where the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 3.3 degree Celsius as against the minus 3.4 degrees a notch during the previous day . However intense cold breeze conditions continue to prevail there with most of the small water bodies frozen due to a fall in the night temperatures.
Ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, although showing an improvement in the night temperature, was recorded at minus 1.7 degree Celsius as against the minus 2.2 degrees a day ago. Freezing cold conditions were covered with a thick fog, making the movement of tourists staying there difficult.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway was recorded at minus 1.4 degrees as against minus 2.0 degrees recorded a day ago, while Kokernag recorded minus 0.9 degrees as against minus 0.5 degrees recorded the previous day.
In frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara, the minimum temperature further plunged to minus 2.4 degree Celsius as against the minus 1.6 degrees recorded the previous day, the MeT office said.
