Sale of Covid orphans: NGO office sealed, 2 arrested

Srinagar, Dec 2: Authorities in Kashmir valley on Thursday sealed office of a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) and arrested two persons at Pampore township allegedly involved in sale of Covid Orphans.
Police Station Pampore received a written application from Chairperson Child Welfare Committee (CWC) District Pulwama for registration of FIR in an alleged illegal adoption and sale of Covid orphans in Pampore area. Accordingly, a case FIR No. 153/2021 of relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Pampore and investigation was initiated. During the preliminary investigation, two accused persons identified as Mohd Amin Rather son of Gh Mohd Rather resident of Bemina and Aijaz Ahmed Dar son of Abdul Hameed Dar resident of Pampore were arrested in the instant case.
During the investigation, it came to fore that the arrested duo are running a trust in Samboora, Pamore by the name of Global Welfare Charitable Trust which was established in year 2020. The said trust has been sealed and essential documents and records were also seized.
Further investigation in the case is going on and more recoveries are also expected in the case, police said.
Earlier, official sources said, Police and government officials raided office of the “Global Welfare Charitable Trust” in Samboora area of Pampore township in south Kashmir district of Pulwama who were allegedly involved in sale of Covid Orphans and seized all dacuments and sealed the office.
Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday lodged an FIR after alleged illegal adoption and sale of Covid orphans has come to the notice of Mission Director, Integrated Child Protection Service (ICPS) J&K.
A non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) has brought into the notice of ICPS about the news article appearing on a number of online portals regarding the alleged sale of Covid orphans by two persons.
The Mission Director ICPS had directed the authorities concerned and the FIR was lodged at Police Station Pampore against the accused.
Also, Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Sheetal Nanda had also taken up the issue with IGP, Kashmir Vijay Kumar for immediate action in the matter under relevant laws
In addition, Mission Director, ICPS J&K, Shabnam Kamili, had issued instant orders to Child Welfare Committees to meet Covid orphans personally which were already identified by the department and uploaded on different online portals of Government of India and had asked to submit a report to the Directorate of ICPS within a day’s time.
A fact finding committees were also constituted for Jammu and Kashmir divisions in order to ascertain the number of orphans and Covid orphans and their well-being in all the districts of the UT.
