Children need protection
12/6/2021 11:02:12 PM

The new variant of COVID-19 Omicron appearing on the pandemic hit world scenario has once again triggered fears about the virus raising its ugly head.
Experts are worried, so are the governments of different countries. A few cases of Omicron have been detected in India and it appears that the virus has infiltrated into the country. Medicos and scientists are trying to study the nature of the virus. They are of the opinion that vaccinated people need a booster dose.
The biggest worry seems to be children as they have not been vaccinated till date as up until now, Covid-19 has caused mild symptoms in children. But in South Africa where the Omicron variant is now the dominant strain, there has been an increase in hospital admissions among young kids.
The new variant is spreading much faster than previous strains of the virus and it can lead to cases getting multiplied at a fast pace. Even two years after the pandemic broke out children continue to be the most vulnerable lot. If we want to keep children away from hospitals then the government should make them eligible for the COVID-19 jabs.
It has been observed that children were not affected severely by the Covid pandemic in the past. Now we are seeing a sharp increase in cases particularly in young kids. It is unjust to allow kids to take on great burdens during the pandemic but not give them the opportunity to benefit from a vaccine. The vaccinating children will protect them from getting Covid and can also help keep them from getting seriously sick even if they do get Covid-19. The vaccine is required for children to return to classrooms and is important for ensuring a safe learning environment in schools. The pediatric vaccine would not only help children, but it will be the basis of eventually eliminating Covid-19 in our population.
Experts are of the opinion that COVID-19 can’t be defeated until children are vaccinated as they constitute 40% of the entire population. Appearance of Omicron is a cause of concern. If it spreads it can once again disrupt normal life and create problems for the people across the world. Following Covid Appropriate Behaviour holds the key. But getting children vaccinated is important as they need to be protected. As on date even the experts are not sure about how the new variant is going to behave.
