12/12/2021 11:37:31 PM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Dec 12: In a joint operation security forces killed a Jaish-e-Muhammad (JEM) militant in village Bargam area of Awantipora in south Kashmir on Sunday.
A Police spokesman said, following specific input about the presence of a terrorist in village Bargam a joint cordon and search operation was launched by the police, 42RR and 130Bn of the CRPF.
He further said, the militant identified as Sameer Ahmad Tantray of the JEM outfit and a resident of Bargam Awantipora was provided ample opportunities to surrender by the security forces. However, he refused and resorted to indiscriminate firing upon the joint search party which was effectively retaliated leading to an encounter.
During the ensuing gunfight, the trapped terrorist was killed and his body was later retrieved from the site of encounter.
Police said, Tantray was a “categorized terrorist” linked with proscribed terror outfit JeM and was part of groups involved in several terror cases.
“Before joining the terror folds he was working as a terrorist associate and involved in providing logistic support to the active terrorists in the area.
He was also involved in pasting threatening posters of proscribed terror outfits in Awantipora and adjoining areas to threaten the law abiding citizens and keep them away from democratic activities”, the police said.
Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition were recovered from his possession. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated.
Police have requested the people to cooperate till the area at the encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any.
"#AwantiporaEncounterUpdate: 01 unidentified #terrorist killed. #Operation going on. Further details shall follow," a police tweet said.
This is the third gunfight in South Kashmir this month. In two earlier gunfights at Pulwama and Shopian districts five militants were killed.
