SRINAGAR, Dec 12: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti today accused the Jammu & Kashmir administration of pushing the Kashmiri youth to the wall so that they resort to violent means in order to fulfill their genuine demands and aspirations.
Talking to media persons here after being denied to hold a youth convention at her residence, Mehbooba said that denying a political space to the youth is equivalent to encouraging them to take up violent means and take the law & order in their own hands thus making a ground for the security forces to target them.
“Our party had decided to hold a youth convention but the administration did not allow the same to be organized.
Thousands of youth wanted to take part in the convention and many among them were stopped by the security forces personnel.
Scores among were arrested and they continue to be lodged at the police stations,” said the PDP President.
Mehbooba claimed that the police and other security agencies had set up 15 Nakas in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir where the youth intending to take part in the youth convention were stopped. She claimed that clothes of many youth were torn by the security personnel thus sending a message that they are not entitled to have a democratic space on the political horizon of Jammu & Kashmir.
The PDP President said that while PDP is not allowed to organize political programmes other mainstream political parties are allowed to organize such programmes in every nook and corner of the union territory. She said that she is put under house detention every now and then adding that she is not allowed to visit any area where some incident takes place.
“I fail to understand the logic behind the denial of holding today’s programme. Leaders of political parties like BJP, National Conference, Apni Party, Congress and Peoples Conference are allowed to hold programmes in different areas of Jammu & Kashmir. When it comes to PDP reasons like COVID-19 and security apprehensions are put forward and as such the programmes are not being organized,” said Mehbooba.
The PDP President termed ‘ridiculous’ security concern like the planting of IEDs as a reason for disallowing the youth convention.
She accused that the Government of India and its ‘cronies’ in Jammu & Kashmir do not want to give political space to the youth especially to those associated with PDP. She said that PDP would continue to project the voice of people so that the issue of Jammu & Kashmir is resolved.
