No holiday on Maharaja Hari Singh’s birthday Govt humiliates Jammu again
12/16/2021 10:46:29 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 16: Despite knowing that the emotions of the people of the Jammu region are attached by the last Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh, the Jammu and Kashmir government has decided against declaring September 23, the birth anniversary of the last Dogra ruler.
The BJP and Jammu-based parties, bar association, traders, and civil society groups had asked the government to declare a public holiday on the birthday of the late Maharaja Hari Singh.
The Upper House of Jammu and Kashmir Legislature had also passed a private member’s resolution in absence of opposition seeking a holiday on the birthday of the last ruler of J&K, Maharaja Hari Singh.
The resolution was moved in Legislative Council by the grandson of ex-Maharaja and BJP legislator Ajatshatru Singh.
After passing of the resolution by the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), various social groups have stepped up pressure on the BJP to declare a holiday on September 23rd-birthday of the last Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh.
There is a feeling among people that it is high time to recognize the services of Maharaja Hari Singh who had signed ‘Instrument of Accession’ to merge the erstwhile State of J&K with Indian Union.
People argued that after the passing of the resolution of JMC there was no reason to delay a decision on this issue as sentiments of the residents of J&K were attached with the last ruler of the State.
The general house of JMC, comprising Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and all elected councillors, it its meeting on July 17 2019, had unanimously resolved “to honour the sentiments of the public by accepting the long-pending demand of Jammu people to declare a holiday on the birthday of late Maharaja Hari Singh.”
BJP corporator Narotam Sharma had moved the resolution which was passed without any opposition from the Congress or independent candidates in the general house meeting, where out of 75 corporators BJP has 43 members.
BJP has earlier repeatedly assured to fulfill its commitment of ‘recognizing’ services of the last Dogra ruler by declaring a holiday on his birthday anniversary.
