Early Times Report

Srinagar, Dec 26: A newly recruited militant who was allegedly involved in the recent killing of a police officer was gunned down in an encounter in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district last night, officials said here on Sunday.
Six local militants have been killed in four anti militancy operations in south Kashmir in the last 48 hours.
Police said the killer of Assistant Sub Inspector Mohammad Ashraf was killed in a gunfight at Khush Roi Kalan area of Srigufwara in Anantnag.
“Based on specific information generated by police regarding presence of a terrorist in village K Kalan Sirgufwara area of Anantnag, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by them and 3 RR ( Rashtriya Rifles) in the said area. During the search operation, as the presence of terrorist got ascertained, he was given ample opportunities to surrender. However, he refused to surrender and instead fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated upon, leading to an encounter,” a police spokesman said.
“In the ensuing encounter, the trapped terrorist was killed and later his body was retrieved from the site of encounter”
The slain terrorist has been identified by police as Faheem Bhat resident of Kandipora, Anantnag who was affiliated with Islamic State Jammu Kashmir.
“The slain terrorist had recently joined the terror outfit ISJK and was the main accused behind the killing of ASI Mohammad Ashraf near Police Station Bijbehara on December 22,” he said.
Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from his possession, he added.
Security forces have stepped up operations and in the last 48 hours six militants have been killed. On December 24, a Hizbul Mujahideen militant who was allegedly involved in a series of killings was gunned down in an encounter at Arwani in Anantnag district.
Five militants including the ISJK new recruit were killed on Saturday in three gunfights in south Kashmir.
In the first gunfight on Saturday morning two militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba were killed in Shopian district. In the evening two militants including an improvised explosive device (IED) expert of radical Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH) were killed in Awantipora sub district.
