Jammu’s power scenario worsening
Students, business fraternity cry foul as Govt adopts indifferent approach
12/26/2021 11:21:34 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 26: The power scenario in Jammu is turning troublesome and tumultuous with each passing day, leaving common masses perplexed and perturbed with the passing day for their no fault.
The frequent outages, regular snags and so called preventive maintenance is taking a heavy toll on the power consumers of the winter capital. Besides common masses, the outages are affecting local businesses, the industrial sector as well as the educational scenario at large.
On social media as well, Jammuites were accusing the power department as well as the government of floating the norms and undermining the rules in an absolute ruthless manner. According to them, the circular issued for the preventive maintenance of the grid systems in Jammu should have been issued 48 hours before its implementation and that mere few hours earlier the power consumers were informed that the supplies shall remain affected. According to them, as per rules for preventative maintenance the information should reach the end user before 48 hours. But there was no such standard operating procedure in vogue when electricity was snapped in most parts of Jammu.
Though in the official handout, it was claimed that the power supplies shall remain affected till 3 p.m on Sunday- Dec 26, the electricity was nowhere seen even till late evening hours. “However, the rules are for fools in this unfortunate part of the land. There is no denial of the fact that the people here are being pushed to the wall.
The student fraternity which is dependent on the online mode of education amid the pandemic are made to suffer. Where are the claims of good governance? The fact is that Jammu has been plunged into a deep morass and there is no one to get us out of it,” writes a Jammu based netizen in his social media post.
According to sources, Jammu is supplied 2004 Mega Units (MUs) less than Kashmir when it comes to revenue, the government, despite providing less electricity to Jammu, has got more revenue from the region.
The past details inform that during the financial year of 2015-16, Kashmir paid a whooping Rs.237 crores less than Jammu. As Kashmir paid Rs 837.17 crore as electricity dues against 8142 MUs of power, Jammu paid a whooping 1074 Rs Crore against mere 6138 MUs of electricity.
During the previous financial years, Jammu paid Rs 346 Cr. more than Kashmir Valley. As Kashmir paid Rs 283.66 Cr against 5161 MUs of electricity, Jammu paid Rs 629.21 Cr for using 522 MUs less than Kashmir that is 4639 MUs.
