Poor devotees likely to be deprived of Yatra due to mandatory online registration

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 3: In its meeting on Sunday, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has decided to close all booking counters of Yatra slips after making online registration mandatory of the Yatra from Katra to Bhawan.
This step has been taken to regulate the numbers of devotees performing the pilgrimage of Mata Vaishno Devi but the biggest question is about poor devotees who don’t have smart mobile phones.
50 percent of the total pilgrims, who perform Yatra, belong to poor families and a majority of them could not afford to purchase a smartphone which is required for online registration of Yatra.
After the outbreak of deadly Coronavirus, educational institutions have started online classes for the students. It is a hard reality that a huge chunk of students, especially of rural areas, are being deprived of education due to their socio-economic conditions. Many families could not afford smartphones for attending classes. The same situation would emerge for poor Yatries of Mata Vaishno Devi who do not have smartphones.
The decision of the Shrine Board to make online registration mandatory is going to create problems for such Yatries. This decision is going to provide an opportunity to the agents and touts to further exploit innocent Yatries. These touts will open shops in different areas to conduct online registration for Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra. The Shrine Board has decided to close all registration counters Saturday’s first-ever stampede at Bhawan of the cave shrine in which 12 devotees were killed and 15 other injured. During the meeting of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, it was decided that pilgrims who have online registration would be allowed to perform Yatra.
Sources said that after the decision of the Board, directions have been issued to the authorities concerned that only those who have online registration should be allowed to cross the Ban-Ganga entrance gate.
