Making Noise Won’t Help
1/17/2022 11:50:58 PM

The Jammu and Kashmir administration in order to claim that the Union Territory is on a path of progress and prosperity created hype about installing smart meters and making electricity prepaid. But the hype has just proven to be a noise that was made to send a message that the power sector is being revolutionized.
During the past few months the power scenario across J&K has worsened and has punctured the claims about consumers getting electricity 24x7. The technical snags and the power disruptions have proven it beyond doubt that a lot needs to be done to put the system right as there are many lacunas that need to be taken care of.
The J&K Government needs to go beyond making announcements. Its claims are confined to papers only on ground; nothing much has been done. The balloon of privatizing power sector stands punctured as the employees of Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited (JPDCL) and Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL) have made it clear that they won’t allow it to happen. Without employees no sector can run and the government needs to understand it. By going on strike the employees of Power Department last month had sent a clear message that they are not ready to follow every diktat. Nor will they allow the government to impose arbitrary decisions on them. After J&K’s transition into a Union Territory, the government has been claiming that power sector has been revamped and the mistakes that were committed by the people handling the department in the past have been rectified. Had these claims been true, J&K would not have plunged into darkness off and on. The snowfall in first week of January exposed the Power Department to the hilt as many areas remained in darkness for days together. Transformers that had developed snags remained in workshops for a long time, which led to many areas, especially far-flung villages, remaining without electricity. Before the winter commenced the department had claimed that it had made all the preparations and people wouldn’t face any inconvenience. But the onset of winter has revealed that preparations were made on papers only and nothing was done practically. The helmsmen need to focus on what’s important rather than creating hype about smart metering and other issues. Just making noise won’t help.
