Giri Foundation teaches craft skills to specially abled girls

Early Times Report
KISHTWAR, Feb 3: Giri Foundation, an NGO, invites support for its skilling initiative Habba Khatoon that is empowering sensory impaired women in the Kishtwar District. A craft based NGO, Habba Khatoon skills these women to become embroidery artisans and adorn shawls, saris and scarves with the finest hand embroideries of Kashmir.
A highly volatile and backward region of Kishtwar is witness to most girls getting married off in their teenage, killing any chance they might have had to be employed forever. If the case pertains to girls with disabilities, then the outcome is even more precarious. In the midst of all this, there is a brave story to inspire from this frontier district.
"It's difficult to even imagine how these deaf and dumb girls from Janasthan Skill Centre Kupwara can work as embroidery artisans and even set up their own production units. Yet I was impressed with the finesse with which they were acing the intricate ek taar embroidery and tilla work and their understanding of placement embroidery. Habba Khatoon today is yet another step for us at Giri towards skilling and empowering women of the Himalayas. What is missing now is an organized financial assistance for start-up to take off," shares Megha B Purohit, Founder, Giri Foundation.
There are many other sensory-disabled girls, who are busy crafting wonderful articles in this remote frontier district and proving themselves that they can do anything. The trust that takes care of such women has been actively involved in providing them assistance and guidance on how they can chase their dreams to become successful entrepreneurs.
In this journey of time-lapse there are rays of hope and an assurance for a better future.
One of the trainees, Saima Akhter says," The items, we have crafted here is a manifestation that we can do wonders and are set to become an inspiration for many."
