Getting Caught Red Handed
2/17/2022 11:25:08 PM
The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) in the recent past arrested a Junior Engineer, a Sarpanch and Naib Tehsildar in Kashmir for demanding and accepting the bribe.
Among the three arrested by the ACB two were government employees and one was a public representative. These people demanding bribes from the poor people is a matter of concern and a shameful act on their behalf. The government needs to frame strict rules for the employees who are caught red handed while accepting bribes. They should be terminated from their jobs first and then the legal proceedings be initiated.
The corruption in the government offices is the root cause of the sufferings of people. It’s strange that despite the government officials drawing huge salaries, they ask for bribes. It seems that they have become addicted to the graft and they cannot perform their duties honestly. These three cases were reported, no one knows how many cases go unreported and are not even heard off.
The need of the hour is to install CCTVs in all the government offices. Besides, a mechanism should be worked out to monitor the activities of the employees who have to deal with the public.
The ACB is doing an excellent job and the people who face difficulties in getting their work done in the government offices due to officials asking for bribes should come forward with their complaints. It’s the people who can identify the black sheep and get them booked. The system cannot change till a common man keeps on following the diktats of the ones who run the system. The officials, who demand bribes should realize that they are paid by the government to help a common man and sort out his problems. They cannot demand money for performing the duties which they are bound to perform.
The corrupt officials being arrested should serve as a deterrent for all the government employees. One cannot say that everyone is corrupt but the black sheep have maligned the entire fraternity. Most people believe that no work can be done in the government offices without greasing the palms of the officials.
A common man needs to become aware about his rights and he can challenge any official who demands bribes from him. The ACB getting more and more complaints are an indication that awareness is being created and a common man is out to change the system.
