Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 12: With scorching summer heat round the corner, Jammu is feared to face another season of pesky power outages as the Power Development Department is facing shortage of around thirty percent shortage of engineers, especially in Jammu province.
Official sources said the PDD has found through a study that the department was facing a shortage of around thirty percent of engineering staff ranging from Assistant Engineer to the Chief Engineers, particularly in Jammu province. The Early Times had recently reported that there was a shortage of around 400 engineers in the department and that a study has put it at thirty percent of available vacancies.
Sources said one of the main reasons of the power crises in Jammu last year was that the department is running short of engineers.
“Engineers form the backbone of the Power department and their shortage is bound it affect the power supplies and you don’t need any rocket science to prove it,” said a delegation of engineers in the department on the condition of anonymity.
It was reliably learnt that some officials in the Raj Bhawan have been asking the eng

neers to hold multiple charges at a time in a bid to counter the shortage of the engineering staff.
Sources said in the last around three years, the Raj Bhawan was numerous times apprised by the officials that the Power department was facing shortage of engineers but that no remedial measures were taken.
“All what is being done is that multiple charges are being given to one official or else the posts remains vacant and when an engineering post remains vacant the problems are bound to erupt.”
In June 2021, following power crises in Jammu, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had assured the people of Jammu division that a committee will be constituted by the Chief Secretary to inquire into the unscheduled power outage in various areas.
The Lt Governor, at a high-level meeting, had said much before the onset of summer, several meetings were held under preparation plan to prevent erratic electricity supply in Jammu division for May-June when the mercury soars high.
“Several meetings were held wherein it was told that there was a shortage of engineers which needs to be fulfilled but no action was taken on that,” the engineers said.
