| Blocked canal irks Lamberi residents | | |

JAMMU, Mar 15: A canal in Nowshera tehsil of Rajouri district has become a huge problem for the residents of Lamberi village as the water channel got defunct due to the widening of Jammu-Poonch National Highway.
The canal at Lamberi has been blocked after the road widening project was taken up by the Border Roads Organization, since then it had turned into garbage dumping site, worrying the farmers and locals alike.
Inhabitants of Lamberi including farmers accused that the Irrigation Department has continuously neglected the fate of blocked canal, as a result, the canal is being choked by three to four feet of garbage, filth and silt thus threatening not only the health of the people residing nearby but it has also become hard for them to irrigate their crops.
The people of Lamberi residing near the canal say that a few years ago the irrigation canal provided very clean and clear water and the locals used its water for drinking as well as irrigation. “Unfortunately the canal got blocked due to the road widening project. The flow of water was blocked after the realignment of the road as a result of which today this canal is full of dirt and the canal has turned into a garbage dumping site," they said.
The filth and dirt in the blocked portion of the canal spreads a strong stench, which threatens to spread diseases.
“Stagnant dirty water near the residential areas not only raises a stink but also has become the breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects. It poses a serious health threat to the residents, especially children, who often fall sick because of water borne diseases,” the residents said.
The locals further said that they informed the Irrigation Department several times to clean the blocked stretch of canal and also to restore the damaged canal, if possible, otherwise close it forever but the authorities did nothing in this regard. |
