Natives paying heavy price
3/17/2022 2:23:59 AM

Jammu and Kashmir Government during the past few months signed many Memorandums of Understanding with the outside firms and companies. Every possible attempt is being made to woo the outsiders to invest in the Union Territory. But the natives are paying a heavy price for it. Outsiders are calling the shots while the locals are watching helplessly.
Mining contracts have been bagged by the outside firms.
Now, it seems that brick-klins in Jammu too are facing closure threat as the bricks from Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan have flooded the markets. The representatives of the brick-klin association have been raising hue and cry about the issue. Their pleas to stop entry of these bricks into Jammu are falling flat. The administration seems least interested in stopping these bricks from reaching into the markets. If the same trend continues, the day is not far away when the locals will have to wind up their businesses and work as agents of the people who are on their way to capture the markets in Jammu and Kashmir.
When the J&K’s special status was revoked people of Jammu were promised that the discrimination with them would end and new avenues will open up for them. But it appears that they are being even deprived of what they had.
No one can stop residents of other states from doing business in Jammu and Kashmir but the government needs to formulate a policy for the local businessmen. If the bricks continue to reach Jammu it would have a direct impact on the brick-klin owners in Jammu. There are more than 250 brick-klins in Jammu region and each klin employees more than 100 people. It means that 25000 people can lose employment.
Another important factor helmsmen need to bear in mind is, if the Jammu is self reliant in brick production then what is the need to allow the bricks from other states to flood the markets, usually such products are brought from other places which a place or a region cannot produce or manufacture.
The government needs to make its policy clear vis-à-vis local businessmen. It appears that some people are out to bulldoze the local businessmen by allowing others to flood the markets with the same products that are already available in abundance.
