NHPC gives lollipop to residents around Salal Hydel Project
Fails to fulfill its duties under CSR, turns villages around dam into garrison

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 31: Passenger sheds constructed by the NHPC under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at Kotli Manhotra and adjoining areas in Reasi District are of no use for the residents.
Locals while talking to a news channel said that this passenger shed is not used by anyone as it remains dirty. “Had NHPC constructed a washroom instead of a passenger shed it would have helped the common people. This shed is used by the drunkards and miscreants. For us these are of no use.”
They said, “NHPC should have constructed watersheds or a school. It would have helped people. No buses stop at these passenger sheds. The NHPC never asked anyone before constructing these sheds.”
Locals said, “Had these passenger sheds been constructed in a planned manner, these would have helped the people. When the Salal Power Project was constructed we were promised jobs and roads. But they failed to fulfill any of their promises. They took our land and gave us nothing in return.”
They said, “The NHPC officers don’t even pick up our phone when we want to cross the reservoir during the night hours. If anyone falls sick, he has to wait till morning to reach a hospital. The NHPC has taken us as hostages.”
“We are living in a stone age. We have no electricity and water. We were promised that electricity within 5 kms of Salal Project will be provided free, but not a single unit has been provided to us till date, “ locals said, adding, “ If the LG led administration doesn’t take note of our sufferings we will stage protests and fight for our rights. The NHPC has failed to develop villages which are next to the power project. From 1983 till date no money under CSR has been spent in the villages next to the dam.”
