Kupwara , 'village of widows' sets lesson for rest of Kashmir on peace: Lt Gen Pandey
4/22/2022 11:56:31 PM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Apr 22: Lt Gen Pandey said this during his visit to Dardpora village in Kupwara which is also known as 'village of widows'. The village of Dardpora close to the Line of Control is home to large women widows during the initial years of militancy.
“Rest of the Kashmir should take lessons of peace from Kupwara, which has been a victim of terrorism and population here has just been used by the terror nexus in past. Dardpora is an example of the misery that terrorism can bring to bear upon innocent population and their lives,” the Corps Commander said while talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Dardpora .
“Kupwara district had been the hardest hit and the people here had suffered the most but the people of the area now understood and it was an example for the rest of the people to follow,” he added.
He also appealed to the youth who have picked up arms that they should return to the mainstream.
“The youth who have taken up arms should return to the national mainstream and work for the development of the country and the nation,” he said.
Lt Gen Pandey said the militant recruitment was down in Kashmir.
“Last year there was a drop in recruitment and this year there is more decline expected. The society and media have understood that there is no need of this (taking arms),” he said.
In Dardpora, a project plan was drawn up by the Army focusing on empowerment of women and youth, Army said.
A total of nine skill centres centres were being run in Kralpura,Panzgam,Warsun and Dardpora. 200 students, including 160 girls, were qualified from the skill centres in the last one year.
Lt Gen Pandey today distributed the qualification certificates for the students.
Widows of Dardpora were also felicitated with Iftar gifts, stitching machines and solar lights, Army said.
The Corps Commander interacted with the villagers and applauded them for their positive outlook, high motivation and strong national spirit and assured them of all possible help from the Army.
