BGSBU celebrates World Environment Day

JAMMU, June 5: As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, World Environment Day, 2022 was celebrated by the Environmental Sciences, Centre for Biodiversity Studies, BGSB University, Rajouri. This year's theme is Only one earth which is set in alignment with living sustainably in harmony with nature. A symposium on the theme was organized to celebrate the event in which the staff, scholars and students of Environmental Sciences, Centre for Biodiversity Studies participated.
Prof. Akbar Masood, Vice-Chancellor BGSBU congratulated the Centre for organizing such events and mentioned that this day signifies a global campaign that calls for a collective and transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet. Prof. Akbar said that being the harbinger of change, the higher education institutions have a greater role in devising ways and means not only to protect the environment but to bring out a social change to rejuvenate all such practices that are critical to ensure not only a safer today but a better tomorrow.
Prof. Akbar stressed on making societies more inclusive and well connected to nature. Prof. Akbar mentioned that we must come forward to heal our planet today; to give a better and much safer future to our coming generations.
Dr A. A. Shah, Associate Dean, School of Biosciences and Biotechnology emphasized that this day has created a platform to raise awareness that the world is facing problems such as air, plastic pollution, global warming and sea-level increasing day by day. Dr Shreekar Pant, Coordinator, Centre for Biodiversity Studies presented his remarks and briefly described the significance of the day. Umar Bashir conducted the proceedings of the Symposium, while the welcome address was delivered by Aasima Jan. Several participants expressed their views on the theme highlighting the fragility of the planet and the need to re-enforce the idea that the Earth is humanity's only home. Snober Fayaz bagged the first position and the second position was shared by Assima Jan and Khurshid Ahmed while third place was secured by Umar Bashir and Nadeem Rather. Dr Mamta Bhat presented the concluding remarks and announced the winners among the participants. A formal vote of thanks was presented by Snober Fayaz.
