Khooni Nallah tragedy: Investigation team yet to make its probe public | 10 poor workers were killed when portion of under-construction tunnel collapsed | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 10: After the killing of 10 workers near Nashri Nallah in Ramban district, the Union Government has appointed a panel to probe the reason for the tragedy but the team has yet to make its findings public. Within hours after the tragedy on May 19, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) had constituted a three-member panel to ascertain the reason for the tragedy in which 10 poor workers were killed. The panel was headed by Professor J T Sahu of IIT Delhi and it was announced that the panel will submit the report to the ministry within 10 days. The state-owned National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already initiated a process to handle such emergency situations and it is also taking all possible measures to avoid such incidents in the future. According to an official handout issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, "the stretch between Digdole and Khooni Nallah of Ramban Banihal section is prone to frequent landslides/shooting stones due to fragile geology. Considering the strategic importance of maintaining all-weather connectivity to Srinagar and after assessing the challenges in ensuring the stability of hills slopes on existing alignment, tunnels, and viaducts are proposed under three packages in this section." It is further mentioned that the twin-tube tunnel work in four-laning from Digdole to Panthyal on Jammu Srinagar National Highway was awarded to M/s Ceigall India Limited in JV with Patel Engineering Limited. The construction work started on February 1, 2022. "It is yet to be determined whether the occurrence of the incidence is due to work being executed or due to natural reasons. A committee of three independent eminent experts has been constituted by the Central government which has already moved to the site to investigate the reasons for slide and collapse and remedial measures thereof", the handout reads. Further action will be taken based on the report of the Committee. NHAI has already initiated the process to handle such emergencies and also taking all possible measures to avoid such mishappening in the future. After the incident, a case under Sections 287 (Negligent conduct with respect to machinery), 304-A (causing death by negligence), 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) and 337 (causing hurt by an act of endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC has been registered at Police Station Ramsu and investigation started. |
