Amid politicking, NC leader says won’t contest assembly polls
7/1/2022 11:11:15 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, July 1: Even as politicking has been gaining momentum in Jammu and Kashmir, a senior leader of the National Conference, Aga Ruhulla has said that he won’t be contesting the Assembly elections till the issue of August 5, 2019 decision is resolved as per his aspirations.
The senior leader has made this announcement on the social media website Twitter while interacting with a group of people especially politicians.
The NC leader said that it was his personal decision and that it doesn’t meant that he was separating from the party but that he would stay away from the polls only.
Sources said the leader took the decision of his own and he has “not been on the same page” as his party leadership over the issues of participation in the Assembly polls.
Observers said the NC leader has been “most vocal” in his party against the abrogation of the so called special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5.
Sources said the NC, however has refrained from questioning Ruhulla over his individual decision of not contesting the polls.
As already reported by the Early Times, political activities have gained momentum in Jammu and Kashmir for the last around two months whereas the frequency of holding such events has witnessed an unusual spike in last few days.
While the NC has been holding almost back to back political shows across Jammu and Kashmir, even of its women’s wing, the “grand old party’s” political rivals like Peoples Democratic Party are equally active in the field.
What seems to have given additional boost to the politicking is the recent statement of the Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
On June 18, in the first indication of a timeline for assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir, Singh during his visit to J&K said that there was a “strong possibility” of starting the electoral process by “the end of this year”.
In August 2019, the State of J&K lost its so called special status following the abrogation of Article 370 and was downgraded to a Union Territory — the State’s bifurcation led to the creation of a separate UT of Ladakh.
Speaking at a function organised to mark 200 years of the coronation of Maharaja Shri Gulab Singh Ji, the first Dogra ruler of the princely State of J&K, Singh said, “Mujhe lagta hai ki is saal ke ant tak ho sakta hai ki chunavi prakriya bhi prarambh ho. Iski prabal sambhavna hai (I think the electoral exercise may also commence by the end of this year. There is a strong possibility).”
