Early Times Report

Srinagar, July 9: Even as efforts continue to trace out the missing persons after the cloudburst at the pilgrimage, the rescued pilgrims from Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine have thanked the Indian Army for saving their lives. Scores of Yatris who reached back to Pahalgam and Sonamarg base camps have been all praise for the efforts of the Indian Army in particular.
A devotee who identified himself as Raj Kumar told the Early Times that he had almost fainted on seeing the death and destruction at the cave shrine, when suddenly a group of Army Jawans came to his rescue.
“When everyone was running for cover, and I had given up hope for life, the only men who could be seen heading for relief and rescue were the Jawans (of the Indian Army) and it was they who jumped on me to take me towards safer location,” hailed the devotee., whose clothes were drenched in mountain-mud.
He said subsequently amid bad weather, a group of Army Jawans escorted him to the base camp of the pilgrimage. “We trekked whole night and if anything inspired us to brave the hostile mountains, it was the commitment of the Jawans,” said another devotee.
Another devotee Harish said there was no fear on the faces of the Jawans but that all they were concerned about was the safety of the pilgrims.
“None of the Army Jawans panicked but their sole concern was to make us reach safe locations.”
Apart from the Army, the NDRF, SDRF, JKP and the paramilitary forces have been undertaking the relief and rescue operations whereas over 15,000 pilgrims have been shifted to safer locations.
At least 16 people were killed and dozens swept away by the flash flood triggered by a cloudburst near the revered cave shrine of Amarnath in Kashmir on July 8 evening.
Yatra's tents and community kitchens have also been flooded.
According to officials, and more than 40 people are still missing.
