J&K assembly polls : New Delhi to call ‘crucial’ meeting to clear formalities
7/12/2022 11:16:35 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 12: In a significant development, the Election Commission of India is likely to soon call a “crucial meeting” on Jammu and Kashmir, to “clear the formalities” for the holding of much-awaited Assembly elections in the Union Territory.
The meeting is expected, in less than a month of the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh saying there was a “strong possibility” of starting the electoral process by “the end of this year”.
The sources said the Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey and other members of the apex body on polls “will discuss the electoral roll revision and compilation of the draft rolls, something which has become crucial in the wake of redrawn assembly constituencies.”
Sources said Jammu and Kashmir Chief Electoral Officer would also be attending the meeting. Sources said the meeting would take place in the national capital to fix modalities for the revision of the electoral rolls.
“Several issues with regard to the revision of the rolls have to be discussed threadbare and it will be a major step towards the Assembly elections,” said a source in the know of the matter.
“This meeting is needed to clear formality for the holding of elections because the paperwork needs to be completed on all fronts,” said the source.
The Delimitation Commission has already done its work. According to the orders of the Delimitation Commission, set up under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019, the Union Territory will have 90 assembly constituencies - 43 in Jammu Division and 47 in Kashmir - with nine of them being reserved for the Scheduled Tribes.
Sources said given the improvement of situation in JK, New Delhi is keen on holding of elections at an earliest.
During his two-day visit to Kashmir in June, the Defence Minister had hinted at possibility of the elections being held by this year end.
