Doda: Flash floods wash away public, private utilities

KISHTWAR, July 20: A flash flood caused due to cloudburst hit Kahara area of Thathri Sub Division in Doda District resulted into mass scale damages to public and government property; however no loss of life was reported from any part of the area that has witnessed massive rainfall in last 24 hours.
This is the second cloudburst that hit the area following early morning cloudburst that hit Thathri town earlier on July 9 with local army camp situated on National Highway 244 had a narrow escape.
As per the details available with Early Times, 23 residential houses suffered damages in today’s flash floods triggered due to cloudburst in Chewera area including eight houses who were completely washed out along with a private school building, Tourist Reception Center, 12 flour mills, four shops, two cow sheds also washed away leaving behind tale of destruction in the form of like of football ground.
“There is a tale of destruction everywhere-dead animals scattered- partially damaged houses hanging around-and people looking for the left over remains of their homes” said Raja Shakeel, journalist associated with local news portal The Chenab Times. Shakeel said that the private School with 265 students was hit by the tragedy that hit the area adding that had the incident took place during school hours, it would had been a disaster.
As soon as the incident happened, SDM Thathri Athar Amin Zargar along with other officials rushed to the spot and started rescue operation. Senior officials including DC Doda Vikas Sharma, SSP Doda Abdul Qayoom also rushed to the spot and issued on spot directions to concerned officials with regard to restoration work including restoration of water supply and electricity in the area.
SDM Thathri told Early Times that during intervening night of 19th/20th July a heavy downpour occurred in Kahara- Tehsil from the side of Tanta/Goila and Jai Nallah and in addition to rainfall, two cloud bursts occurred somewhere between 02:00 AM to 4:00 AM adding that in view of same and resultant rise in water levels damages to property occurred primarily in Charwa area and in addition to that some damages were reported from Goila and Tanta the preliminary details of which have been provided by Tehsildar Kahara.
Further Kahara-Tanta road of PMGSY has been completely washed away at numerous spots. Damages have also occurred to Kahara-Halaran road and some infrastructure of Jal-Shakti which are being restored on war footing basis. Besides it heavy loss has occurred to the standing crops in major parts of Tehsil, the exact details of which are being ascertained.
DC Doda informed that concerned officials have been asked to prepare the details damage report so that necessary compensation could be provided to the affected families. He said that directions have been passed for repair and restoration of damaged roads in the area.
As per preliminary report, 46 persons had reported damages to their homes, shops, flour mills, cow sheds, under construction houses and approximately the property worth more than two crore has been reported so far in today’s cloudburst incident. The cloudburst destroyed crops, fruit trees, and roads, as well as water and electricity systems, on a large scale in vicinity.
In the Chilly area of Bhalessa, cloudburst and heavy floods caused a huge loss to public property as it washed away the live stock. Besides this, there is a huge loss reported from many other villages in the Kahara and Bhalessa areas.
It is pertinent to mention that earlier this month, massive cloudburst hit Kiber Nallah and adjoining areas of Dachhan in which two bridges were washed away and huge chunk of agricultural land and dozens of flour mills got damaged.
