After 11 earthquakes in 4-days, experts warn big tremor can hit J&K

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 26: Two more tremors jolted Jammu and Kashmir on Friday as eleven back-to-back tremors occurred in the union territory during the last four days.
Data revealed by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) recorded two tremors in J&K on Friday.
First tremor measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale occurred at 3.28 a.m. with latitude 33.17 degrees north and longitude 75.57 degrees east.
The epicentre was 3.5 kms north-east of Doda town. The depth was 5 kms inside the earth’s crust.
The NCS data said the second tremor measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale occurred at 4.07 a.m. with latitude 33.23 degrees north and longitude 75.56 degrees east.
The epicentre was 10 kms north of Doda and the depth was 10 kms inside the earth.
With two tremors occurring on Friday, 11 earthquake shocks have been recorded in J&K during the last four days.
Quoting eminent geologist of Jammu and Kashmir Prof GM Bhat, some reports suggested that eleven earthquakes during the last four days is a dangerous indication.
There is a possibility of a big jolt in coming so we must be cautioned. The people should be more cautious during the night.
Experts did not rule out the possibility that this “active cluster” would face an earthquake of a 6 to 7 Richter scale.
“We are continuously monitoring and recording earthquakes during the last 24 hours and the last jolt was of 3.9 Richter scale”, experts said.
Experts have warned of a bigger earthquake in the Jammu region and asked people to take precautionary measures after eleven back-to-back temblors this week, citing heightened activity in the area classified as highly vulnerable to quakes.
“This region has been tectonically active for a long time and in the recent past. There is a likelihood of more such jolts in the region and a bigger one is likely to happen anytime in near future,” experts said.
