World Oral Health Day celebrated

Jammu, Mar 20: A week long World Oral Health Day was celebrated at Indira Gandhi Government Dental College Jammu with the theme BE PROUD OF YOUR MOUTH in collaboration with department of Periodontology and Department of Public health dentistry. Speaking on the occasion Dr Rakesh K. Gupta, Principal and dean IGGDC Jammu spoke on importance of celebrating World Oral Health Day on March 20th, 2023. The Principal, Rakesh K. Gupta, on the occasion said that the impact as per study of Global Burden of Disease showed that oral diseases affect about 3.5 billion people worldwide. He said most oral diseases and non-communicable diseases share common modifiable risk factors like unhealthy diet rich in free sugar, consumption of alcohol and tobacco use. He emphasized public health interventions by addressing common risk factors by promoting a well-balanced diet low in free sugar and high in fruits and vegetables and promoting water as main drink and avoidance of junk, fast food etc., stopping use of all forms of tobacco, reducing alcohol consumption and promoting use of protective equipment when doing sports and travelling on bicycles and motorcycle (to reduce the risk of facial injuries), brushing teeth twice daily and use of dental floss.
Indira Gandhi Government Dental College Jammu organized week-long event to celebrate World oral health day in collaboration with Indian Society of Periodontology in association with Department of Public Health Dentistry. Postgraduate department of Periodontology organized various events like Nukkad Natak, Rangoli making, poster competitions, lectures and a survey camp was organized to assess gum care and sensitivity among patients visiting the department. Dr Manik Sharma, Professor and Head, briefed about various events organized during this week long program and highlighted about various treatment modalities including some advanced periodontal surgery procedures performed in the department. Dr Vineet Kotwal, Assistant Professor and Dr Abhima Kumar of the department conducted activities and delivered lecture.
Department of Public Health Dentistry under the able guidance of Dr Iqbal Singh, HOD, Public Health Dentistry along with the team organized week long awareness camps at Blind School, Bus stand, Railway station, slum areas, worker’s colony as well as teacher training program was conducted to promote oral health care. The entire team of PHD comprising of Dr Amita Parihar, Dr Renu Bhagat, Dr Anu Gandral and Dr Manisha Koul participated in the week-long event under the supervision of Dr Iqbal Singh.
The function was presided over by Dr Parveen Akhter Lone, Officiating Principal, Indira Gandhi Government Dental College Jammu. Dr Manik Sharma presented a Vote of Thanks and acknowledged the presence of all HODs, faculty, other doctors, PG and UG students and/staff. He also thanked the participants for display of excellent talent of students, organizers and institutions where awareness camps were conducted. He also thanked print and electronic media to be part in spread of oral health awareness among the masses. He mentioned special thanks to Dr Shipra Sepolia, Dr Chahat Puri and Dr Jyoti Gupta.
